Agile Training for the Government Product Owner

A new, free agile training course for government product owners has been released on the AGL Academy.

In recent years, agile methods of software development have been adopted by many government agencies.  Unless you’re hiding under a rock somewhere, if you’re in government technology you’ve heard about agile.  But as many have found out, simply applying the “agile” label to process or person doesn’t automatically grant success.  Acquia’s experience across public sector clients suggests that many government technology practitioners are still struggling to see how their role fits into the agile model, or they wonder if they are doing agile “the right way.”

The Agile Government Leaders (AGL) network was created to address this problem.  The group’s mission to get agile infused into government processes aligns well with my team’s own efforts to bring agile methods to Drupal projects in government.

In my personal experience, the most misunderstood role is that of the agile Scrum product owner.  That’s why I highly recommend the recently-released “Agile for the Government Product Owner” training course, available as part of the AGL Academy.

The course is a free, self-directed training resource written specifically for government.  In addition to readings and videos, the course includes two hands-on exercises to help participants practice for using these concepts in the real world.  With particular attention to practical examples and challenges, the course covers:

  • Lesson 1: Introduction To Agile
  • Lesson 2: How to be a Product Owner
  • Lesson 3: Creating and Managing a Backlog of User Stories
  • Lesson 4: Interpreting the Burndown Chart

For anyone interested in a more thorough introduction to the course, or with questions about product ownership in government, there is a live webinar event scheduled for June 16, 2016 at 1PM ET.  The webinar will be recorded and posted here for the benefit of anyone who misses the live presentation.

Update: this curriculum was also presented at Drupal Gov Con 2016.

Slides from that presentation are here: DrupalGovCon2016 – PO Academy
